The Bard of Avon. Proprietor of the Lord Chamberlain’s Men of the famous Globe Theatre. Favorite playwright of her majesty Queen Elizabeth I. WILLIAM “Shall I Compare Thee to A Summer’s Day” SHAKESPEARE! And If you liked him in Shakespeare in Love, then you’re in luck—the new TNT drama Will puts a punk-inspired spin on the preeminent writers of the English language.

The show follows the young Shakespeare, played by Laurie Davidson, as he leaves his wife and children behind to pursue the life of an artist in the “punk rock theatre scene” of Elizabethan London, writes TNT on the show’s website. Armed only with his pluck and his prodigious talent, Will must navigate a tricky world of raucous theatregoers, disapproving religious authorities, and political intrigue of every sort—all “to a modern soundtrack that exposes all his recklessness, lustful temptations and brilliance.”

From the soundtrack to the colorful costumes and edgy dialogue (the phrase “cock-blocking bastard” is utilized), Will aims for deliberate anachronism á la A Knight’s Tale or Baz Luhrmann’s The Great Gatsby. While that may not be up everyone’s alley, we for one can barely contain our neck ruffles!
Will premiered on July 10, with a new episode to air every Monday night on TNT.
