Fans of the His Dark Materials trilogy are finally about to get the companion series they’ve been waiting for.
According to The Guardian, Philip Pullman is set to release The Book of Dust, a fantasy trilogy series that works alongside His Dark Materials. The first volume of the trilogy will hit bookstores on October 19.
It has been 17 years since the last installment of His Dark Materials, The Amber Spyglass, has been released. Since then, various companion books have been written. This is the first extensive look opportunity to delve back into the universe Pullman created, though.
The Book of Dust promises to tell the story of Lyra Belacqua, the protagonist of the original trilogy, in the periods both before and after His Dark Materials took place. It will explore how Lyra ended up at Jordan College and the origin of some of the other creations of Pullman’s universe.
The storyline running through the trilogy will involve the battle between free speech and totalitarian governments, simillar to the premise of George Orwell’s 1984.
Given that the new trilogy is being worked on at the same time as a television adaptation of His Dark Materials, there is likely to be some connection between the two projects.
The first two volumes of the new trilogy have already been completed and the third is in development, so the rest of the trilogy could be coming soon after October!
