PBS announced production for a new show with the working title “The Great American Read,” at their presentation during the Television Critics Association summer press tour. This show will aim to create a dialogue among Americans to discuss exactly which 100 novels are the Great American novels.
The series will come in eight parts and is set to debut in the spring of 2018. “The Great American Read” will feature both celebrities and everyday Americans speaking on what books should be chosen and why.
There are a few rules. The advisory committee will only allow one book or series per author. Voting will happen throughout the show, and committee members may add titles. The novel picked at THE great American read will be revealed on the series finale.

This series was launched with the intention to celebrate novels and the joy of reading. “The time is right for this nationwide reading initiative that will encourage conversations and complementary activities in communities across the country. We can’t wait to see what America chooses!” says Beth Hoppe, the Chief Programming Executive, General Manager, and General Audience Programming at PBS.
