The director of the much-anticipated sci-fi movie Dune has just released the film’s runtime, and it’s a doozy. Denis Villeneuve, known for his direction on Blade Runner 2049 and Arrival, confirmed that Dune will have a runtime of 155 minutes (2 hours and 35 minutes). Incredibly enough, this is still a half-hour shorter than the longest Marvel film.
Villeneuve announced the film’s runtime in an interview with Quebec newspaper, La Presse. In addition, he stated that there is actually a lot more footage than what will be released in theaters. He and editor Joe Walker have decided to create a director’s cut that will more than likely make it onto the Blu-ray and DVD of the film. But for now, let’s begin with the two-and-a-half-hour runtime, shall we? We are definitely going to have to remember snacks for this one!
The film is based on Frank Herbert’s 1965 novel of the same name. It features a star-studded cast with newbies to the science fiction realm (Timothee Chalamet and Zendaya) as well as alumni to the genre (Oscar Isaac and Dave Bautista). Dune is set to release in theaters and on HBO Max on October 22. Villeneuve confirmed a while back that this is only part one of the two-part film series to cover the book in its entirety. With theaters opening back up, Dune is one of the most anticipated films of 2021. If you’ve not yet watched the insane trailer, you can do so below.
