George R. R. Martin has known the overarching plot of A Song of Ice and Fire since 1993, when he first outlined a trilogy that has since expanded into seven books (not that we’re complaining). In early 2015, British bookseller Waterstones tweeted then deleted three photos of Martin’s original proposal which detailed who Martin planned to survive to the end of the series, confirmed legitimate by Harper Collins.

Five central characters will make it through all three volumes, however, growing from children to adults and changing the world and themselves in the process. In a sense, my trilogy is almost a generational saga, telling the life stories of these five characters, three men and two women. The five key players are Tyrion Lannister, Daenerys Targaryen, and three of the children of Winterfell, Arya, Bran, and the bastard Jon Snow.
Whether or not that’s still accurate is up in the air: when this outline was discovered, Martin had already deviated from his plan. But if you ask me, everyone else is gunna die.
In June 2016 the Hollywood Reporter reported that five Game of Thrones stars negotiated incredible contracts for season 8, making them some of the highest paid actors on cable. Peter Dinklage, Kit Harington, Lena Headey, Emilia Clark, and Nikolaj Coster-Waldau will each earn upwards of $500,000 per episode – nice.
With starring roles for season 8, it’s reasonably safe to say that the following characters might survive at least halfway through the season – Jamie Lannister, Cersei Lannister, Tyrion Lannister, Daenerys Targaryen, Jon Snow, Sansa Stark, Arya Stark, Bran Stark, Sandor Clegane, Davos Seaworth, and Sam Tarly. Was that sentence vague enough to be considered spoiler free? I think so.
But don’t celebrate too soon, a handful of fan favorites have yet to be credited for season 8 in any capacity. Though to be fair, with the season premiering anywhere between a year and two years from now, marking actors in starring, recurring, or guest roles would definitely qualify as a spoiler.
Bronn, Theon, Gendry, Gilly, Brienne, Jorah, Missandei, Melisandre, Varys, Tormund, and Jaquen are all marked TBA for the upcoming eighth season.
Did they forget about Pod??? / Via Sporcle
With open storylines, they all better make an appearance. Season 7 already took off down the Hollywood path so if we’re going to placate the fans, I require the following before their untimely but not uncertain deaths:
- Bronn getting a castle and Golden Girls-ing with Pod, Jamie, and Brienne.
- Gilly, Varys, and Melisandre getting more airtime. Specifically, Varys. He has the sassiest facial expressions.
- At least two more bumbling love triangle moments between Tormund, Brienne, and the Hound.
- Clegane Bowl.
- Jorah unsuccessfully stealing Dany away from Jon and then pouting until he dies fighting for his Queen and for screentime.
- Gendry doing anything.
- Missandei getting her Shot at Love with Gorgeous, Gorgeous Greyworm.
- Theon avenging his sister with 20 good men before their uncle kills them both.
- Jaquen making an appearance?
