Get ready. Get pumped. Two phenomenal actors are stepping onto the stage: Oscar Isaac (Star Wars, Ex-Machina) and Keegan-Michael Key, of ‘Key and Peele’. The two will star in Shakespeare’s ‘Hamlet’, with Isaac playing the titular role and Key as Horatio. Based on some roles I’ve seen Isaac in, I think he’ll make a riveting Hamlet. The play will run at the Public Theater in Manhattan from June 20th through September 3rd.
Sam Gold, a theater director, actor and Tony Award Winner for direction of the musical ‘Fun Home’, is directing the play. The New York Times reports that the production was originally supposed to close the current season at a different theater, Theater for a New Audience’s Polonsky Shakespeare Center in Brooklyn. However, “Mr. Gold parted ways with the theater — in particular its artistic director, Jeffrey Horowitz — last June over artistic differences.”
The production of Gold’s Hamlet was up in the air for some time before the official announcement that it would be performed at the Public.
This is not Isaac’s first time starring in a Shakespearean play. He starred in “Two Gentlemen of Verona” and “Romeo and Juliet”, both productions at Public’s Shakespeare in the Park. Although less known for his stage acting, Keegan-Michael Key is a veteran performer. We except an excellent production!
