The television drama Billions, starring Paul Giamatti and Damian Lewis, centers around a U.S. attorney who takes on a hedge fund manager in a series of legal battles. As the series nears production on its fifth season, the show has brought on a well-respected author into their writing team.

Nonfiction writer Ben Mezrich has signed on to join the writer’s room of the Showtime series and will directly work with the showrunner as a consultant. Mezrich is best known for writing nonfiction books about ambitious people who either cheat the system to get ahead or create something that changes society. Specifically, he is the author of The Accidental Billionaires, which covers the founding of Facebook and the legal battles that ensued afterwards and was adapted into the award-winning film The Social Network.

Mezrich expressed his excitement over joining the show in a statement to The Boston Globe:

“I’m psyched to be working with the smartest people in TV. I’ve been a huge fan of [co-creators] Brian Koppelman and David Levien since ‘Rounders,’ I love ‘Billions,’ and I’m taking the Acela straight to Hollywood.”

The news of Mezrich joining the show comes after the release of his most recent book Bitcoin Billionaires, which follows Cameron and Tyler Winklevoss, who originally sued Facebook creator Mark Zuckerberg in The Accidental Billionaires, as they succeed in the world of cryptocurrency. Since Billions has been known for dabbling in cryptocurrency in certain plotlines, Mezrich’s involvement might be tied to this new book.
