Dr. Strange is finally coming to the big screen! The notoriously occult figure will be played by the extremely talented Benedict Cumberbatch. His current contract only has him signed up for one Dr. Strange movie but there is no doubt he will be featured in future installments of ‘The Avengers’ series.

The reason Dr. Strange is not a household name like Iron Man or The Hulk is because his story was created during the Silver Age of comics. The Silver Age marks the decline of comic book popularity following the aftermath of WWII. Perhaps now that Dr. Strange is going to have a his own movie while comic book adaptations are in full swing, the hero may well be standing just as tall as America’s favorite Avengers and Justice Leaguers.
Dr. Strange is unique because he is the only hero who fully adopts the ancient concept of a mystical wizard. Superheroes of today have powers, but they aren’t really considered “magical.” Superman can shoot lasers from his eyes and Thor can call down lighting, but nobody has the vast amount of mind and reality bending control that Dr. Strange has. The surprisingly long list of abilities can be found here.
If you are a Dr. Strange newbie, you can see what all the hype is about by watching the newest trailer:
The movie is set to be released on November 4th. Personally, I think Dr. Strange is going to achieve what Deadpool has achieved for the DC universe. He is going to be a lesser known hero that comes smashing onto the scene with trope surpassing characteristics. If you are interested in Dr. Strange, now is a good time to pick up some comics to get yourself familiar with the character before he makes his debut!
