New ‘Ready Player One’ Trailer Goes Deep Into Steven Spielberg’s Adaptation

A new trailer has dropped for Steven Spielberg’s Ready Player One adaptation, based on Ernest Cline’s novel based on a screenplay he co-wrote. It’s looking absolutely, 100% insane. It’s a CGI explodey fest with more pop culture references than The LEGO Movie and Comic Con combined. If you read Cline’s novel and this is what you imagined, then, golly me, I am profoundly jealous of your colorful imagination.

The trailer does a lot of legwork in setting up who the main character is, the world(s) he lives in, and how his journey will play out. OASIS looks beautiful, if a little dimly lit. If you’ve ever tried some of the new virtual reality technology out there, imagining a world like the one Cline invented is not that hard to do. When someone touches you in OASIS, you feel it. Can’t really blame the Ready Player One characters for choosing to live in OASIS all the time.

Although Spielberg essentially got the ball rolling on CGI blockbuster blowouts with Jurassic Park, he’s generally used it sparingly (besides The Adventures of Tintin, which, yes, is a Spielberg movie). It looks like he’s going hog wild with it in Ready Player One. It makes sense in context since OASIS is supposed to be a virtual world. It might be the one time in film history when using practical effects would actually take you out of the world.

Ready Player One stars Tye Sheridan, Olivia Cooke, Ben Mendelsohn, T. J. Miller, Simon Pegg, and Mark Rylance. It’s due out March 30, 2018.
