New Fifty Shades of Grey Manuscript is Missing

According to Random House, a manuscript of EL James’ latest Fifty Shades of Grey novel told from Christian’s perspective has been stolen. Grey’s manuscript disappeared on Tuesday, and according to a Random House spokesman there is an ongoing police investigation.

Some fear that the manuscript will be leaked to the media, and since the series has sold over 125 million copies since 2011 it’s a legitimate worry.

In an interesting parallel, chapters from the unfinished manuscript of Stephenie Meyer’s Midnight Sun were leaked back in 2008. As a result, Meyer put the novel on hold indefinitely. Fifty Shades of Grey began as a fanfiction version of Meyer’s Twilight series, and Meyer’s Midnight Sun was going to be told through Edward’s perspective of Twilight.

We’re not sure whether or not manuscript thieves have a vendetta against male retellings of popular novels, but hopefully EL James escapes Meyer’s fate.
