Like it or not, we live in the time of comic nerds. In November of 2017 alone (i.e. not blockbuster season) there will be two major comic book movie releases: Thor: Ragnarok and Justice League. Media giants Disney and Warner Bros. own, respectively, the “Big Two” comics companies, Marvel and DC. A few months ago Netflix announced they’d be jumping in the comics game with their purchase of Millarworld, comic magnate Mark Millar’s company.
Millar’s comics have had widespread appeal, having been adapted into films like Kick-Ass, Kingsman: The Secret Service, and Captain America: Civil War. Though it seemed the logical move for Netflix to simply adapt some of Millar’s existing material, Netflix has announced they’re releasing a brand new comic series.

The Magic Order will join Mark Millar with artist Olivier Coipel in what Millar describes as “R-rated adult fantasy. Something for the kids who grew up 10 or 20 years ago loving all-ages fantasy in cinema, but now wanting something a little tastier.” The story follows five families of magicians who hold down ordinary blue collar jobs, but they have a secret life as the protectors of humanity. It sounds kind of like The Incredibles but for adults and with sorcerers.
The Magic Order will be released both online and in print. This will be the first comic from Netflix, but maybe not the last. If this ends up being a success, then maybe Netflix can attract more creators. Could we see a Brian K. Vaughan-Fiona Staples-Netflix teamup? Could Saga be coming to Netflix? I’m making this all up, but with Netflix entering the ring with Marvel and DC, anything is possible.
