Neil Gaiman’s ‘American Gods’ Gets a New Character

One of the biggest gripes people have with movie/TV adaptations is when things don’t line up. That is exactly what is happening with the Starz adaptation of American Gods by Neil Gaiman. Apparently a new character named “Vulcan” has been introduced into the show. The character carries a message about guns and how dangerous they are to society. Co-showrunner Bryan Fuller stated, “We started talking about America’s obsession with guns and gun control and, really, if you’re holding a gun in your hand, it’s a mini volcano, and perhaps, through this character, there’s a conversation to be had.”

Regardless of which side of the gun debate you are on, any reader would agree that this is a major change from the book. Fans of American Gods want to see the book they love adapted into a show that stays true to the story. For many in the political world, this is a great idea, especially considering that Neil Gaiman himself agreed to adding the character.

The best thing about any controversy is the ability to form your own opinion. The only way to do that is to read the book and watch the show!
