**This article contains Big Little Lies spoilers**
So, yeah, you read the headline. Meryl Streep will star in the second season of Big Little Lies on HBO, The Hollywood Reporter reports. She’ll be playing Mary Louise Wright, who is the mother-in-law of Nicole Kidman’s character.
At the end of the first season (which was based on Liane Moriarty’s book), Perry Wright (played by Alexander Skarsgard) was revealed to be the murder victim at the center of the mystery. It made sense and was somewhat vindicating since he was essentially a monster. Now Meryl Streep is playing his mother, who’s concerned for her grandchildren. Kidman’s character cannot catch a break.

The first season was based on the book, and the second will be based on a story written by Moriarty, though the scripts were all written by showrunner David E. Kelley. So far only Streep, Kidman, and Reese Witherspoon are 100% confirmed to return for the second season, but the rest of the cast is expected to return as well.
In a statement, HBO said the second season will take a look at the “malignancy of lies, the durability of friendships, the fragility of marriage and, of course, the vicious ferocity of sound parenting. Relationships will fray, loyalties will erode … the potential for emotional and bodily injury shall loom.”
Though there’s been no confirmation, Big Little Lies is expected to return in 2019.
