The Smutty Book Club is not your grandma’s book club, or so it says on the club’s Meetup page. For fans of romance and erotica books, this public meetup group offers a space to read, explore, and discuss romance, sex, and everything in between without any judgment or awkwardness.
Founded in 2013, this New York Meetup group was founded on the embrace of sexual discussion that penetrated society as a result of the popularity of “50 Shades of Grey,” according to founder Dawn Schmidt in an interview with The Brooklyn Paper.
The incredible popularity of “50 Shades of Grey,” which sold more than 100 million copies worldwide, verified readers interest in romance and sex.
Though sex has long been a social taboo in polite discussion, the club’s formation allowed like-minded readers to escape the isolation of reading erotica behind doors, and find a public platform to voice their thoughts, opinions, and more on the subject.

For each upcoming meetup, members vote on which steamy literary work they want to read, then gather once a month (typically on the first or second Tuesday) at Jack Dempsey’s bar in Midtown to discuss the book.
The club has gathered quite a large following of romancers, with such a high attendance that the club’s founders have created a sister club called the Brooklyn Smutty Book Club.
This month’s chosen work is Chad Kultgen’s novel, “The Average American Male.” The Midtown club will be meeting tonight (August 1st) at 7 p.m. at Jack Dempsey’s bar to discuss.
For readers closer to Brooklyn, the Brooklyn Club’s next meetup will be held on August 16th at 7:00 at Paddy’s of Park Slope bar. This meetup will also be discussing Kultgen’s novel, “The Average American Male.”
Make sure to check the club’s Meetup page to see upcoming meetups as well as book selections.
