Matthew McConaughey Reveals He Was Sexually Abused in His New Memoir “Greenlights”

TW: Sexual Abuse

In his new memoir, Greenlights, Matthew McConaughey defines moments in his life as green, yellow, or red lights (hence the title) that caused him to move forward, pause, or stop. The actor shares the valuable life lessons he’s learned from these experiences, whether they were green light or red light moments. In the memoir, the actor reveals and discusses the sexual abuse he experienced as a teenager.

“I was blackmailed into having sex for the first time when I was fifteen,” McConaughey recalls in his book. “I was certain I was going to hell for the premarital sex. Today, I am merely certain that I hope that’s not the case.” The actor also reveals that he was molested by a man when he was eighteen and knocked unconscious in the back of a van. The actor did not provide further details about either experience in his book, released this week, but said he’s “never felt like a victim” as a result of being sexually abused as a young person. “I have a lot of proof that the world is conspiring to make me happy,” writes the actor. Greenlights is out now!
