Marvel has finally risen to the occasion and is developing a solo movie for Black Widow. Scarlett Johansson’s superspy has become a mainstay in Marvel’s ever-expanding movie franchise, but only as a secondary character. However, Variety now reports that Marvel has hired screenwriter Jac Schaeffer to pen a script.
Schaeffer’s still burgening in the industry, but Nasty Women, her all-female version of Dirty Rotten Scoundrels, is in the pipeline, starring Anne Hathaway. She also wrote the Frozen short Olaf’s Frozen Adventure, which was divisive, not because of its quality, but because it was over twenty minutes long and played before Pixar’s Coco. Still, Marvel Studios head Kevin Feige met with a number of screenwriters before settling on Schaeffer.

Johansson first appeared as Black Widow in 2010’s Iron Man 2, and last showed up in 2016’s Captain America: Civil War, in which she had a fairly major role. Fans have been aching for a solo movie ever since Black Widow first showed up. When it was announced that Captain Marvel would be getting her own movie in 2019, starring Brie Larson, it restored hope that Marvel was finally open to making female-led superhero movies. Hopefully this is a step in the right direction, as later this year fans can also expect Ant-Man and the Wasp, which will star both Paul Rudd and Evangeline Lilly as leads. Here’s to hoping this works out. Let the fan theories commence as to what Widow’s solo story will be!
