The story is about a young girl named Sulwe, who had skin as dark as midnight and no one else she knows has skin as dark as hers. All Sulwe wants is to be beautiful, and then one night she is visited by a shooting star from the night and she learns the story behind night and day. Sounds like a sweet inspiring children’s story. It’s all about self esteem and learning to see the true beauty within yourself. Which is a great message for children and adults.
Lupita, wrote this story based on her own childhood, and how she struggled with her skin color growing up. She never saw someone like her represented in television or in movies and for that reason it took her a long time to love the skin she’s in. Now, she serves an inspiration for dark skinned children who can see themselves in her and in other actors. Representation is extremely important and this animated film and book is a great example of how important it is. Children can open the book and watch the film and see someone who looks like them doing great things and that will definitely inspire them.
