Leonard Nimoy is best known for his role as Spock on Star Trek. While he’s definitely a rock-star actor who flawlessly played a beloved emotionless alien, he’s also an all-star singer. What exactly does he sing about? Bilbo Baggins, of course! On July 28th, 1967, Leonard Nimoy, dressed as brilliant Spock, sang ‘The Ballad of Bilbo Baggins’. In the video, he is lip-syncing, but it is Nimoy’s real, memorable voice.
Spock sung about Bilbo for Ricky Nelson’s short-lived show, Malibu U, and the public went crazy. Rolling Stone reports:
Ricky Nelson portrayed the dean of the fictional Malibu University on the show, and every week musicians would stop by the school to play some tunes. Apparently, this also included aliens from the 23rd century with a strong interest in the works of J.R.R. Tolkien. For years this amazing video was only available on bootleg VHS tapes traded around at Star Trek conventions, but here it is thanks to the magic of YouTube.
Without further ado, watch this amazing clip and weep tears of laughter, joy, and nostalgia!
