If you’ve paid any attention to pop culture in the last few years, you will have heard of Lil Nas X, the rapper behind the Grammy Award-winning hit single ‘Old Town Road’ released in 2019. Now, as Lil Nas X’s career continues to grow, he has officially written C is for Country, his new children’s book. Published through Random House Kids, the book reached number eight in top kids’ books on its release date.
The book’s plot follows a story-book version of Lil Nas X, decked out in a pink rhinestone cowboy outfit, and his trusty horse Panini as they explore the alphabet “from sunup to sundown” by traveling around a farm pointing out things that bring Lil Nas X’s character joy. Throughout the story, the reader comes to see that beneath just teaching the alphabet, the deeper message is to be yourself. In an interview with NPR, Lil Nas X says, “I think we all got that message, [be yourself], growing up but it was never like truly enforced. It was kind of like ‘do what you want, be who you want, but be who I want you to be.”‘ The rapper, and now author, continues to explain that his entire public persona is trying to communicate an honest version of this message to kids.
Lil Nas X has always been vocal about his appreciation for kids and has always attempted to share positive messages with them since his time releasing ‘Old Town Road’. His positive impact on them has continuously shown over the years and I believe a kids book was the perfect next step! Not only has this book been a positive step in Lil Nas X’s career, but it is also a positive step in the future of diversity in children’s books. It is no secret that the book world is not as diverse as it could be and the same reigns true for children’s books. Lil Nas X’s book following him, a black man who is open about being a member of the LGBTQ+ community, is the perfect representation needed for children who desire to see someone like them in the pages of books. I, for one, am in complete support of this new release by Lil Nas X and can’t wait to see what he does in the future!
