The eagerly-awaited Steven Spielberg-directed film adaptation of the YA bestseller Ready Player One (2011) has finally named its lead: Tye Sheridan. Sheridan is set to play Wade Watts, an orphaned teen who dedicates his life to finding the hidden treasure in a puzzling and nostalgic virtual reality known as OASIS.
The film has been a long time coming, almost as long as the book itself. Warner Bros. purchased the film rights from author Ernest Cline one year before the book was even published. People have slowly been signing on over the past year, and there was a worldwide open-call for actors earlier this year—resulting in the signing of Sheridan.
“Where do I know that name from?” you might be asking yourself. We asked ourselves that too, so here’s a little primer. His first major role was in the art-film darling The Tree of Life, followed by a lead role alongside Matthew McConaughey in the coming-of-age film Mud. He’s done a number of smaller films, but you’ll be able to familiarize yourself with his face later this year as a young Cyclops in X-Men: Apocalypse.
The movie is scheduled to start filming this spring, on track for a 2018 release.
