Are you in need of more incredible book photos on your Instagram feed? Then we’ve got you covered. Each week, we here at Bookstr feature one incredible creator sharing their love of books through amazing book photos with the bookstagram community. Today, we’re featuring @kelseyandherbooks whose aesthetic is cozy, bright, welcoming, and full of pink.
Why did you start your Bookstagram?
When I started @kelseyandherbooks, I didn’t understand how vast the Bookstagram community was. I started my account purely because I had been sharing small book reviews on my personal account and wanted a place for my “reviews” to live permanently. I only followed a couple of Bookstgrammers at the time (hi @meagansbookclub and @emeryreads!) and was pleasantly surprised to find this corner of the Instagram platform.
Where are you from?
I currently live in a small town in SE Alberta, Canada. I was born and raised in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan, and my family and I moved to Calgary, Alberta, when I was ten. My boyfriend (now husband) and I moved back to Saskatoon and then to northern Alberta before settling in this area to start our family!
What do you want your Instagram to bring to the world?
Joy. Pure and simple.
Fun fact about you:
I will almost always write out the word for a number versus using the numeral in a sentence. (One versus 1)
My gosh, there are too many to name. I am so lucky to be surrounded by so many intelligent, creative, talented people in this community, so here are just a small sample of those who inspire me daily:
I could literally go on forever.
Favorite Books and Authors:
My favorite author of all time is Jill Mansell, who doesn’t get nearly enough love and attention on Bookstagram!! Other favorites include:
Sarah J. Maas
I’m a big fan of Jason from The Happy Ever After Playlist (Abby Jimenez), Jake from How To Fail at Flirting (Denise Williams), and Zaf from Take a Hint, Dani Brown.
My TBR is pretty vast, but if I had to choose my ten MUST READS for 2021 (based on what I currently have on my shelves), I’d choose:
The Gilded Ones by Namina Forna
Fat Chance, Charlie Vega by Crystal Maldonado
A Promised Land by Barack Obama
Lobizona by Romina Garber
Written in the Stars by Alexandria Bellefleur
The House in the Cerulean Sea by TJ Klune
Wow, No Thank You by Samantha Irby
Grown by Tiffany D. Jackson
The Vanishing Half by Brit Bennett
From Blood and Ash by Jennifer L. Armentrout
Jonny Appleseed by Joshua Whitehead (BONUS)
What’s your special approach to content?
I try to be as honest and authentic as possible. I struggle with creativity, so I keep my photos very simple and stick to a similar style for everything. Reviews are not my strong point, but I always try to be honest about how a book made me feel and what I think did and didn’t work. I never try to be more or less than who I am.
Aesthetic / Instagram page theme:
Cozy. Cohesive. Simple. Pink.
How often do you post?
What does your Bookstagram mean to you?
Everything. To try and encapsulate everything this community means to me in just a couple of sentences would be impossible. Through this platform, I have made friends who I love and will be in my life forever. I have been introduced to authors and genres that I may have never given a second look to before. I have learned to read more critically. It means everything.
I love my local used bookstore, The Page & Whisker!
Who would you have supply you with a lifetime of books?:
Wednesday Books, an imprint from Macmillan and St. Martin’s Press. They have published some of my very favorite books of the last year!
Author to take a selfie with:
R. Eric Thomas!!!
Favorite book cover:
Oh gosh, don’t make me choose just one!
Felix Ever After by Kacen Callender
The Girl With the Louding Voice by Abi Daré
Here For It by R. Eric Thomas
Fable by Adrienne Young
When did you know you had made it as a Bookstagrammer?
I don’t believe I have! I felt pretty special when I received my first physical ARC from a publisher though, and I still get SUPER excited when authors interact on my posts.
I am definitely part of the MaasTrash family! A Court of Thorns and Roses, Throne of Glass, Crescent City – I love them all so much.
Advice for aspiring Bookstagrammers:
Be yourself. Read the books you want to read, post what you want to post when you want to post it. And if Bookstagram ever feels like work, step back and recalibrate.
