John Green has achieved huge success as an author. He is best known for The Fault in Our Stars and Paper Towns, both of which were turned into feature films. Even though he has sold over 10 million books, Green still goes through periods of feeling like a failure. He posted a video about it, and I must say, hearing such a successful man talk about failure is actually quite inspiring. You can watch the video here:
He explains that his sense of failure comes from his inability to write a book as good as The Fault in Our Stars. After attempting to write some other books, he ended up quitting and “sobbing” over his manuscript. How can such a talented writer feel so talentless?
After such crazy success, Green was overwhelmed and felt people were watching over his shoulder while he was writing. It’s hard enough being creative: Having to deal with a mob of hardcore fans that will undoubtedly say “this is not as good as his last book,” is frightening.
We can easily say that Green shouldn’t worry what anybody thinks, but nothing is ever that cut and dry.
There’s good news for Green. He has plenty of time to write his next book, and he can already enjoy the comforts of a successful career. As fans, we could probably be more patient. There are literally millions of books out there to occupy our time. John Green, we love you. Take all the time you need!
