HBO is set to release a limited series adaptation of Jo Nesbø’s novel, The Son, with Jake Gyllenhaal attached as its star and executive producer. The Son, described as a tale of vengeance, set amid Oslo’s brutal hierarchy of corruption, follows Sonny Lofthus, who is serving time for crimes he did not commit. Sonny’s life changes completely when he learns the truth about his father’s death.
Gyllenhaal is set to executive produce the series under his Nine Stories Productions banner along with Riva Marker. Lenore Zion will serve as writer, executive producer, and showrunner; and Denis Villeneuve is attached to direct and executive produce the series. Additionally, Westworld creators Jonathon Nolan and Lisa Joy will executive produce the series via Kilter Films along with Athena Wickham. David Litvak, Gary Michael Walters, Michael Litvak, and Svetlana Metkina of Bold Films will also serve as executive producers with Jo Nesbø and Niclas Salomonsson. Nine Stories Productions, Kilter Films, and Bold Films will produce the series in association with Warner Bros. Television. In a statement, Francesca Orsi, Executive Vice President of HBO Programming, said “We are beyond excited to see how this powerhouse team tackles this exceptional work.”
