J.K. Rowling’s First Literary Agent Explains Why ‘Harry Potter’ Is So Magical

20 years ago, something magical happened that would change our lives forever – Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone was published. Seven books and eight films later, in addition to many other spinoffs, games, merchandise, and even a theme park, we’re reflecting back on the world that Rowling created.

In an interview with HuffPost, J.K. Rowling’s first Literary Agent, Christopher Little explained his first thoughts on the book and how it became such a phenomenon.

He stated:

“When I received the submission from Joanne (as she was known at the time) Rowling, it just came in as an unsolicited submission (of the first three chapters) and was picked up by our then office manager who was looking through the slush pile…“She liked it and bought it to my attention. Once I read it, I had no reservations whatsoever and in fact felt very excited about it.”

Imagine being one of the first people to pick up Harry Potter and realize it’s going to be huge! Little goes on to say,  “It was clearly presented as a fully realized world […] I don’t think I recall reading anything so immersive since The Lord of the Rings many years earlier. We quickly wrote back to Jo asking to see the rest of the manuscript as soon as I had finished those initial chapters.”

From there, the first Harry Potter book was rejected numerous times before being picked up by Bloomsbury Publishing. Thank God they did! 20 years later, we’re still in love with the wizarding world and the magic that J.K. Rowling created.
