Way back in 2011, actor Alan Rickman told an interviewer that author J.K. Rowling shared a secret about the Harry Potter series with him – something that not even the director or producers knew. Now, following Rickman’s passing, Rowling has finally revealed what that secret was.
The saga started when Rickman gave this quote to RTÉ, the Irish state-run radio and television network:
“She gave me one little piece of information, which I always said I would never share with anybody and never have, and never will. It wasn’t a plot point, or crucial in any tangible way, but it was crucial to me as a piece of information that made me travel down that road rather than that one or that one or that one.”
What was that cryptic “not-crucial, but crucial” secret? Rowling was silent on the subject for more than four years. But then, following the passing of actor Alan Rickman, one fan asked Rowling to finally reveal what she told Rickman:
And Rowling responded!
“Always,” of course, is Snape’s famous line from Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows. It refers (SPOILER ALERT) to Snape’s undying love for Lily Potter – and, perhaps, to the extension of that love to Harry. So now we know that Rickman understood the full importance of that word way before the rest of us did!
