As we all know, J.K. Rowling frequently takes to Twitter to voice her opinions and advocate for causes she feels strongly about. Last Friday, she turned to her favored social media platform in order to speak out about what she views as the need for gun control in the USA, following last week’s horrifying school shooting, in which seventeen students and teachers were murdered.
Responding to a Twitter user @ConservativeTht who advocated the installment of armed security in schools to prevent shootings, Rowling accused him of inventing the European friend who allegedly questioned the absence of such security. She countered listing things an actual European might say.
Hi David! You seem to be struggling to make your fictional European friend sound authentic. Try something a *real* European might say, like ‘we don’t have armed school guards,’ ‘we don’t sell kids assault rifles’ or, more simply, ‘don’t use me to argue for more guns, Dave.’ pic.twitter.com/f2FpEQW0jD

On Valentines Day, nineteen-year-old Nikolas Cruz, armed with an AR15 rifle, shot seventeen students and teachers at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, Florida.
In Britain, where Rowling is from, the gun regulation is some of the strictest in the world. In 1996, Thomas Hamilton shot sixteen school children and their teacher, after which petitions called for a ban on private ownership of handguns in the UK. The Firearms (Amendment) Act was passed the following year which outlawed all cartridge ammunition handguns, except 22 calibre single-shot weapons, however .22 handguns were banned later that year. Since then, there has been only one mass shooting in Britain, which occurred in 2010, when Derrick Bird shot and killed twelve people.
Rowling has recently garnered criticism for her defense of Johnny Depp’s casting in the Fantastic Beasts franchise, her retrospective assertions of diversity in Hogwarts, as well as her failure to ensure that Dumbledore’s sexuality is explored in the upcoming second Fantastic Beasts film. However, she has received a number of very positive responses for her stance on gun control, with many people retweeting her message, and replying congratulating her for voicing her opinion on the issue.
