New course studies the languages from 'Game of Thrones'

It’s Official: You Can Now Learn Dothraki at School

Ever wonder what the hell the Khals in Game of Thrones are actually saying? Now you can study and learn the 3000 words that make up the language of the nomadic Dothrakis at UC Berkeley. This new summer class will be taught by the inventor of the language, David J Peterson.

Peterson, who has a Masters in Linguistics from UC Berkeley, also created over 40 languages including the High Valyrian on Game of Thrones and ones used on the shows Penny Dreadful and The 100. Besides mastering the Dothraki language, the course “The Linguistics of Game of Thrones and the Art of Language Invention”, will cover the art of language by studying the ones created for Game of Thrones.

Peterson said the student’s goal was to “learn how to create their own language [and learn] how to create writing systems and everything that’s involved in that process”. You can learn new languages and develop your own!
