The first trailer for the second Fantastic Beasts film was always going to be controversial, given the amount of controversy that the plot and casting decisions have already given rise to (i.e: people are NOT happy that they’re yet again skimming over Dumbledore’s sexuality and they are also NOT happy that the film retained Johnny Depp in the titular role of Grindelwald in the wake of his abuse allegations.) HOWEVER, these issues are not what is causing a stir on Twitter right now. Oh no. What is getting the Potterhead knickers in a twist is an apparent plothole evident in the first seconds of the new trailer.
The trailer opens with an impressive shot of the figures of three wizards apparating onto the bridge leading into Hogwarts and… *record scratching noise* Rewind. Yep, that’s them. You’re probably wondering how they ended up here… SINCE IT IS IMPOSSIBLE TO APPARATE ANYWHERE ON THE HOGWARTS GROUNDS. This has been pointed out by a number of Twitter users including Carolyn Meers.
I’ve very excited but very distracted because YOU CAN’T APPARATE ANYWHERE IN THE HOGWARTS GROUNDS. Have decided that Crimes of Grindelwald must take place before the rules were changed because that would be a ridiculous oversight! #WizardProblems #FantasticBeasts @jk_rowling

So I’ll assume you can apparate and disapparate at Hogwarts before Dumbledore was headmaster???#FantasticBeasts

DID THEY JUST APPARATE IN TO HOGWARTS? #FantasticBeasts pic.twitter.com/FCuOs3cEKE

I mean. They’re not wrong. So it’s get us thinking: did this rule only come into play later in the life of Hogwarts? Or did the headteacher temporarily suspend the rule as Twitter user @acuthberto pointed out in a subsequent tweet is possible. But, as he says, CMAAAAN.
