I couldn’t contain my excitement while watching the trailer for BBC’s upcoming adaptation of Little Women, and I’m sure you couldn’t either. So imagine my joy when I saw this wonderful photo shoot and interview with the new cast. Little Women has always been one of my favorite books, and the classic 1994 adaptation starring Winona Ryder is one of my most beloved holiday movies, and I’m not the only one. As Violet Conroy notes in her piece for i-D-Vice:
The allure of the BBC’s latest adaptation of Little Women, lies in its depiction of women’s progress and growth — in classic coming-of-age style. A three-part adaptation of Louisa May Alcott’s much-coveted novel, it focuses on four sisters from childhood to adulthood, set against the backdrop of the American civil war. Directed by Vanessa Caswill and shot in Sofia Coppola-style naturalism, last seen in the spellbinding form of The Beguiled, Little Women promises a totally different experience to your average historical drama.
The photos of the cast on set, taken by Irish photographer Ellius Grace, are absolutely mesmerizing and a great introduction to four rising stars, including Willa Fitzgerald (who will also star in the upcoming The Goldfinch adaptation as Kitsey Barbour) and Maya Thurman, the daughter of Uma Thurman and Ethan Hawke. The photographs of each actress are accompanied by a brief questionnaire, allowing us insight into the personalities of the artists behind the wildly different March sisters.
