Idris Elba and Matthew McConaughey to Star in Dark Tower Adaptation

Stephen King has enjoyed more than his share of Hollywood adaptations, but nobody has ever touched the series he calls his “magnum opus” – until now. A film adaptation of King’s series The Dark Tower is in the works, and it will star Idris Elba and Matthew McConaughey.

King’s Dark Tower series features a unique blend of genres, most notably Western and fantasy. In the story, a lone gunslinger named Roland Deschain journeys towards a Dark Tower while pursuing a mysterious antagonist known only as “the Man in Black.”

In the film adaptation, Elba will play Deschain and McConaughey will play the Man in Black. The two actors are already getting into their roles:

The adaptation has been a long time coming. King published the first Dark Tower short story way back in 1978, and that story eventually became part of the first novel in the series, called The Gunslinger (1982). Since then, King has published seven more Dark Tower novels. Film rights and rumors have been kicked around since 2010, with actors as diverse as Javier Bardem and Russell Crowe attached to the project before Elba secured the role.

Now, the long-delayed movie project is finally underway. Stephen King himself confirmed the news on Twitter, as did the movie’s two stars.
