The cover art for the upcoming illustrated edition of Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone has been released! Publishers Bloomsbury and Scholastic unveiled the new art yesterday.
The cover prominently features the Hogwarts Express, and its vision of the train is a fresh one. Artist Jim Kay has ignored the existing imagery from the Harry Potter movies and other media, and given us a brand new take on the magical train. The Hogwarts Express retains its familiar red and black color scheme but now features dragon-inspired elements, including a scaly exterior and a smokestack in the shape of a dragon’s head.
Hedwig the owl and (of course) Harry Potter himself are also featured on the cover. The same picture will be used on both the U.S. and U.K. versions of the book. Check out the U.S. cover below:
It’s great to see a new vision of what the world of Harry Potter should look like. Chris Columbus’ film version was a great take on the imagery of J.K. Rowling’s original book, but that’s no reason to avoid taking a second look. It’ll be very fun to see how Jim Kay handles other parts of the Harry Potter world when the full book is released.
