HBO Offers $250,000 Bounty Payment According to New Leak

Variety acquired a message released Thursday written by the anonymous HBO hacker. Dated July 27, the message appears to show HBO responding to the initial video message, which informed them of the massive data breach.

In the newly released message, HBO offers to make a “bounty payment” of $250,000. This is apparently as part of a program in which “white hat IT professionals” are rewarded for “bringing these types of things to our attention.”

Variety commented that:

while the message takes a curiously non-confrontational tone in response to a hacker out to damage HBO, a source close to the investigation who confirmed the veracity of the email explained it was worded that way to stall for time while the company attempted to assess the serious situation.

The message requests that the hack extend the ransom-payment deadline one week, so bitcoin could be acquired, and payment can be made. It says:

You have the advantage of having surprised us. In the spirit of professional cooperation, we are asking you to extend your deadline for one week.

The $250,000 offer is much less than the “six months salary” requested by the hacker who alleges they make $12 million to $15 million per annum.

The hacker has already released the phone numbers and email addresses of ‘Game of Thrones’ cast members as well as episodes of the show, and other HBO programs such as ‘Room 104.’
