Jinkies! Our beloved bookworm and mystery solver, Velma Dinkley, is getting her own animated series on HBO Max! No my friends, you haven’t lost your glasses. The streaming platform announced on Wednesday that comedic genius, Mindy Kaling will executive produce and voice the lead of Velma. This adult animated series will give a backstory about the “unsung and under-appreciated brains” of the iconic mystery-solving squad. Velma is described as “an original and humorous spin that unmasks the complex and colorful past of one of America’s most beloved mystery solvers.” Not only was Velma one of my favorite members of the Mystery Inc. gang, but growing up (and even now) Velma was one of my favorite characters period. So my friends, it’s safe to say I’m fangirling hard right now.
HBO is the perfect home for this project! An adult cartoon will allow long time fans to enjoy mature themes and get to know Velma even better; we get to see Velma come into her own. Mindy shared the great news on her Instagram and gave us some hints at what to expect:
A show exploring Velma’s sexuality? Somebody please don’t wake me from this amazing dream. HBO Max has also renewed the animated original Close Enough for seasons 2 and 3 (Totally recommend this show!). Created by Regular Show’s J.G. Quintel, Close Enough is about a married couple, their five-year-old daughter, and their divorced best friends all living together on the east-side of Los Angeles; season 2 premieres Feb. 25. Are you excited about HBO Max’s latest additions? Will you be watching?
