This Halloween, get ready to be scared by some spooky tales. English Heritage, a charity that oversees more than 400 monuments and historic buildings, has commissioned eight authors to write “Eight Ghosts,” a collection of ghost stories inspired by various historic sites.

The authors, including Mark Haddon, Jeanette Winterson, and Sarah Perry will each write a story based on one of English Heritage’s historic sites. One such location is Dover Castle, where tourists have reportedly heard doors slam, and have seen mysterious images appear in the castle’s underground tunnels. Visitors can also explore an underground hospital that was used during World War II.

“The castles and stately homes of England have long inspired ghostly myths and legends,” says English Heritage editor Bronwen Riley.
The book will be hitting shelves this October from September Publishing. Proceeds from the book’s sales will go toward the upkeep of English Heritage sites around the United Kingdom.
