Even before the movies adaptations of The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings came out, Tolkien had a massive influence on fantasy culture. He successfully brought together many different mythologies, particularly Norse, and introduced them into the American canon. By doing this, he revitalized ancient traditions and even inspired the infamous dice rolling game, Dungeons and Dragons.
For a long time The Lord of the Rings were just books that people loved, kind of like Marvel Comics. Then Peter Jackson came along and created one of the best film trilogies ever made, one step behind Star Wars of course. Since then, Hobbits, Dwarves, and Elves have been just as much a part of our culture as the lightsaber wielding masters of the force.
So here’s to J.R.R. Tolkien and the hours upon hours of entertainment he has given the world. Thank you, and cheers to the Professor!
