J.K. Rowling often draws inspiration from real life for her stories. The idea for Harry Potter came to her while she was delayed on a train ride, Hermione is based on her younger self, and Harry’s dealings with death were based on the passing of her mother.
Now, we know more about one of the most beloved characters, Hagrid! A while ago, Rowling revealed that Hagrid isn’t able to concoct a Patronus because he was kicked out of school and never learned the complex magic. And now, according to HarryPotterWiki, Robbie Coltrane, the actor who played Hagrid claimed that the character is “based on a Hell’s Angel [J.K. Rowling] knew in the West Country… he was just huge and terrifying. And then he would sit down and talk about his garden and how his petunias had been very bad that year.”
A Tumblr post circulated seeming to tell a similar story, but mentioned that the man Rowling met preferred cabbages to petunias.

Either way, an intimidating man sat next to Rowling and talked about tending to his garden.
Rowling is living proof that you can be inspired by real life! You’ll forever think of Hagrid as a rugged look, tough-guy who loves cabbages…and petunias!
