Every August 3rd, Esther Day is celebrated to spread the love for friends and family. It was inspired by Esther Earl’s last wishes before her passing from thyroid cancer in 2010. She was a vlogger, author, online personality, and an outstanding member of the Nerdfighter community. Her parents collected her journal entries and drawings along with author John Green’s contribution in order to create her biography This Star Won’t Go Out: The Life and Words of Esther Grace Earl.

It was this sad yet beautiful story that became an inspiration for Green’s novel, The Fault In Our Stars. John Green explains the message behind Esther Day:
“The kinds of love that are too often overlooked in our culture: love among friends and family. Before she died in 2010, Esther Earl asked us to remember her birthday with a celebration of love among family and friends. And so every August 3rd, people around the world take a moment to say I love you to those they care about.”
Take this day to share your love for the people who make your life spectacular.
