George R.R. Martin Teases ‘Game of Thrones’ Plot Twist That Only Readers Will Enjoy

George R.R. Martin’s A Song of Ice and Fire series is famous for its twists and turns – and those twists have helped make the television version, Game of Thrones, a massive success. But according to Martin, the series’ next big twist will appear only in the novels. That’s because the show has already killed the character that plays a key role in the twist!

Martin didn’t spoil the twist itself, but he did drop some hints about the upcoming shocker in an interview with IGN. Martin explained that he debated including the plot twist for a couple of years before making up his mind. “I have decided to do it,” Martin declared. “The show can’t do it, unfortunately, because they have killed someone I have not killed.”

The HBO series Game of Thrones has departed from Martin’s book series more and more in recent seasons – though it was always the show’s producers that made the call to deviate, since Martin’s books were already in print. This time, though, it’s Martin who is making a conscious decision to create a clear difference in the two series’ plots, since the show has now outpaced the book series.

The promised big twist will appear in Martin’s upcoming novel The Winds of Winter. So what will the twist be? Thanks to repeated delays in the release of The Winds of Winter, fans will have plenty of time to think about that question and discuss their theories. But Martin thinks they’ll have a hard time figuring it out from his limited clues, and he said as much in the interview. “At this point there are like 15 characters who are dead on the show who are still alive on the books,” he pointed out. That won’t stop his fans from trying to figure out who the character is.
