George R.R. Martin Skipping Appearances to Focus on Book

No, you didn’t read the headline wrong. George R.R. Martin is actually writing. After what seems to be years of criticism from his devoted fans, he is finally hitting the books.  Normally one to embrace industry events, George R.R. Martin is taking a break on the bench this season.

Comic-Con takes place in San Diego from July 9-12 and George R.R. Martin will not be in attendance. The A Game of Thrones author blogged an apology to fans: “I have too much to do. Too many things on my plate. Son of Kong foremost amongst them.” Son of Kong is an inside joke in reference to his forthcoming book The Winds of Winter.

Martin has been involved in HBO’s Game of Thrones panel since 2010, moderating through 2012 and sitting as a panelist for 2013 and 2014. Additionally, Martin will not be appearing at November’s World Fantasy Convention in Saratoga, NY—which he cryptically tweeted to his fans.

The author has not released a book in the A Song of Ice and Fire series since 2010, and HarperCollins told fans not to expect the next installment in 2015.

Don’t lose hope Game of Thrones fans! Martin says should he complete The Winds of Winter before these events happen, he reserves the right to change his mind. Now all we need to know is how many of our favorite characters is he going to kill?

Are you excited for the next book in the Song of Ice and Fire series?
