We look back at one of our biggest Game of Thrones articles from 2017, ahead of Season 8’s premiere!
In the midst of fire-breathing dragons and sibling rivalries, this season of Game of Thrones served up some serious lusty glances between Brienne of Tarth and Tormund Giantsbane.
It was love at first sight, for Giantsbane that is. Fans can recall the longing expression Giantsbane gave the knight as she trotted through Castle Black in season 6, helping to reunite Sansa Stark and Jon Targaryen (too soon?).
Though Brienne has visibly shuddered in disgust at the looks Tormund has thrown her way since then, their budding romance transformed the wildling into a source of comedy for viewers everywhere.
His hilariously awkward flirting attempts continue even when the camera stops rolling, according to actress Gwendoline Christie. Christie, who plays Brienne of Tarth, guest-starred on the Late Night With Seth Myers on Tuesday where she discussed fellow actor Kristofer Hivju.
According to Christie, Hivju stays in character off camera and mimics his character’s infamous flirtatious behavior.
“He will start chewing a sandwich wildly at me, start masticating wildly at me, really kind of making love to that sandwich as he eyeballs me. So strong, eyes like lasers pouring right in,” Christie told Meyers.
Though Christie is a “classically trained actress,” she admitted that Hivju’s performance is the only time she breaks character, “without fail.”
What’s even more hilarious, perhaps, is the fact that Christie was caught off guard during their filmed scenes.
“No one told me that this was gonna happen. In the script it simply said, ‘Tormund gives Brienne a look.’ I was not expecting the power, the magnitude, of intense sexual intention to pour out of a man’s eyes and cover me.”
Fans will certainly miss the intense gazes of Tormund Giantsbane if his character fails to make an appearance in the final season of Game of Thrones. Since the premiere date is speculated to be somewhere in 2019, we will have to wait some time to find out his character’s fate.
Even if his character fails to make a return, Jaime Lannister’s potential move towards Winterfell may still have a happy ending in store for Tarth.
