FReadom Fighters: The Movement Fighting Modern Censorship

The recent book bans and burnings make us fearful for the future of literature. But there is hope, in the form of a movement called #FReadom Fighters.

As you may know, there has been a recent push by a certain Texas Representative to ban hundreds of books from libraries across the state. This is a symptom of the wider conflict plaguing the United States. One has only to remember the recent book burning to see why. As discourse concerning what should and should not be taught to our children spirals out of control, the situation for us book-lovers seems rather bleak. Fortunately, there is hope.

According to Publishers Weekly, a group of Texas librarians has banded together on social media in a movement titled #FReadom Fighters. Since its inception in November 2021, the movement has worked to combat the overwhelmingly negative situation with positivity. For instance, instead of outlining books that should be banned, members engage in discourse about, and encourage the authors of books they enjoy. But their efforts do not stop there. The larger organization formed from all of this has since engaged in campaigns to promote both unity and literacy across the United States.

After all of this bad news surrounding book bans and burnings, it is rather nice to learn someone has been fighting for intellectual freedom all along. It would seem social media is doing exactly what it was meant for: connecting like-minded individuals in ways that did not seem possible before. And in so doing, empowering them to effect change.
