The Nebula Award Winning Annihilation is the first book in The Southern Reach trilogy. In the book, Area X has been in exile for decades, however it is about to be explored by a number of expedition teams. The audience is given access to the twelfth expedition through our narrator, the biologist, played by Natalie Portman. The team consists of four women, including the biologist, an anthropologist, a surveyor, and a psychologist. Each of the eleven teams before them has failed and died in a number of horrible ways, yet volunteers for the expedition still come forward. The blurb on Amazon reads:
They arrive expecting the unexpected, and Area X delivers—they discover a massive topographic anomaly and life forms that surpass understanding—but it’s the surprises that came across the border with them and the secrets the expedition members are keeping from one another that change everything.
