Johnny Depp will reprise his role as Gellert Grindlewald in the third installment of the Fantastic Beasts franchise. Speaking to Collider, Depp confirmed that there are many possibilities for future storylines involving his character, and that he is very much “look[ing] forward to the next installment.”
Depp’s casting in the titular role of the upcoming second Fantastic Beasts film has been a source of controversy due to his alleged abuse of ex-wife Amber Heard.
Fantastic Beasts creator J.K. Rowling has defended the franchise’s decision to retain Depp following the allegations, and her support of Depp has divided fans, many of whom have called for a boycott of the series, viewing the casting of an alleged abuser in the lead role of a children’s film as inappropriate.
According to the NME, the third film is set to begin filming in the middle of next year.
