As we look back at the standout releases of 2025, our team couldn’t help but celebrate the stories that surprised us, moved us, and made us fall in love with reading all over again.
These are the debuts that lingered, sparked late-night conversations, and reminded us just how thrilling it is to meet a fresh voice for the very first time.
Any Trope But You by Victoria Lavine
When bestselling romance author Margot Bradley’s secret stash of “Happily Never After” endings leaks online, her career implodes overnight. Determined to support her chronically ill sister, Margot trades love for literal death — by attempting to write her first murder mystery. But when her sister sends her to a remote Alaskan resort to finish the draft, Margot accidentally falls into the arms of Forrest Wakefield, the resort’s reluctant owner. What starts as an attempt to outrun her scandal quickly becomes a heartfelt, trope-filled love story that neither of them is prepared for.
I chose this debut because Any Trope But You is truly a standout romance of 2025 — warm, funny, tender, and emotionally sweeping in all the right ways. Margot and Forrest’s banter had me laughing from page one, and their dual POV dynamic is perfection. Forrest might genuinely be the sweetest MMC I’ve ever read, and the sisterly bond between Margot and Savannah brought me to tears more than once. This book is a flawless, 6-star-caliber debut and one of my favorite romance reads of the year.

Girl in the Creek by Wendy N. Wagner
Girl in the Creek follows Erin as she traverses the Clackamas Forest in search of her brother, who went missing a few years prior. But instead, she finds a different missing person — the girl in the creek. The girl doesn’t stay dead, though, revealing a disturbing power taking root in the Pacific Northwest.
I was an ARC (advanced reader copy) reviewer of this book, and I was immediately drawn in by the interludes from the perspective of the entity overtaking the woods. It’s a book that balances hypnotic prose and shocking twists. Wagner is truly merciless but in the best possible way.

The Tournament of Heirs by Amilea Perez
Metztli and Acalan are heirs to the House of Life, the current ruling House in the Aztec Empire. To ensure their legacy continues, both siblings must compete in the Tournament of Heirs, fighting to survive with the heirs of the other six houses. There can only be two winners, two blood-bound tributes to conquer the rest and bring their House to victory. Amidst chilling violence and tender love, destiny weaves an unforeseen path.
This debut stood out to me because of the close sibling bond and the elements of feminism. I rarely read books with siblings as the main focus, and I really enjoyed how Metztli and Acalan made each other stronger. I was excited to see Metztli understand the power in her femininity and dream of a world where women empowered one another instead of these circumstances that would rather see them tear each other apart.

Aftertaste by Daria Lavelle
Konstantin Duhovny is haunted by ghosts, though rather than see them, he tastes their favorite foods. Deciding to use this ability to give people one last meal with their departed loved ones, he begins his journey into NYC’s culinary scene. Despite his best intentions, though, his actions are creating dangerous conditions in the Afterlife. I borrowed this book from my local library, and I loved the imagery and the fact that this book succeeded in making me hungry while I was reading it. Lavelle’s characters are multidimensional, and the story moves along at a nice pace.

The Sinuous Bargain of a Cowardly Prince by Kayliani Shi
Prince Ramiel is a bastard; his existence was kept secret from his kingdom for his entire life. But when his older brother dies in battle, Ramiel is forced to stand in his place in the upcoming coronation duel despite being untrained. When Ether, an elven warrior with deep-seated hatred for humanity, is summoned to the castle to be sacrificed, Ramiel intervenes and strikes a deal with her. In exchange for saving her life, she is to train him for the duel, but they soon discover curses and secrets that will change them for better or worse.
I had the privilege of reading an ARC of this book and was immediately drawn in by the title alone. Kayliani Shi’s writing is beautifully descriptive and straightforward, and the story flows well with a great balance between action and exposition. The characters and their dynamics are a breath of fresh air, and I’d love to learn about the process that led to their creation. This is medium-paced and character-driven with some subversions of popular tropes and archetypes, and the ending left me hungry for the upcoming sequel and prequel novella!

When Devils Sing by Xan Kaur
When Devils Sing centers around four teenagers in the rural Georgia town of Carrion. They come together when a local teenager disappears, something that isn’t uncommon. Every thirteen years, cicadas emerge with their screams being heard all around town. As they all become involved, sinister secrets are revealed regarding the town’s founding and urban legends.
When I initially discovered this debut novel by Xan Kaur, I knew immediately that it was something I would become enthralled with. I am often trying to find novels that feed into my Southern Gothic obsession, and this one did the trick. With the various perspectives and bone-chilling secrets haunting the town, it is everything I needed this summer. I especially love books that feel like home, and When Devils Sing was perfect for this. From the vivid descriptions of screeching cicadas to the choking humidity, I enjoyed every part of it. If you are looking for a modern Southern Gothic that transports you to rural towns with deep-rooted history, Xan Kaur’s debut novel is the book for you.

It’s Different This Time by Joss Richard
It’s Different This Time was a sweeping NYC love story for the ages and had a romantic style reminiscent of Nora Ephron. The story follows two former roommates, Adam and June, who are forced back together at the NYC brownstone that started it all after going no-contact, and their unresolved feelings are left at the doorstep. Not only is there an inheritance on the line, but their reconciliation sparks a second chance to either mend their relationship or accept they aren’t meant to be and move on.
This was a strangers-to-roommates-to-friends-to-strangers-to-friends-to-lovers story (whew!) and readers piece together June and Adam’s history through a dual timeline from June’s POV. This book had all the right ingredients to create the perfect love story, and it was everything I could ever want in a romance. It’s perfect for fans of ’90s nostalgia, romance, and Broadway/theater lovers. Warning: you’ll leave a part of yourself at 74 Perry St., but in the best way possible.
