The director of the adaption will be Mike Flanagan, who has conducted Netflix’s adaptation of the King novella Gerald’s Game.
There’s an interesting story about King novel-film adaptations: Warner Bros. had been developing this film many years ago with the idea of making it two: Doctor Sleep, the sequel of The Shining, and Overlook Hotel, the prequel. However, the plan didn’t work out because of limited budget. Following the success of IT, now the King adaptation becomes a fire in the market again.
The Torrances are the family haunted in this line of King’s horror world. In The Shining, Jack Torrance, a writer who loses his teaching job because of alcoholism, takes his wife and his son Danny to Colorado for the position of a winter caretaker in a hotel named “Overlook.” Danny is a psychic who can use his gift “shining” to connect with supernatural worlds and the beings within. In the beginning, the Torrances think this new job will give the family a new life; yet, with unexpected and mysterious events popping up and with Danny’s spiritual senses, the story leads somewhere unknown and surprising.
Doctor Sleep begins as Danny (starred McGregor) carries the trauma of the Overlook Hotel in The Shining into adulthood:
He’s become a reflection of his murderous father, with lingering rage and a drinking problem that dulls his pain as well as his “shining” powers. Those powers return when he embraces sobriety and uses his gift to help the dying at a hospice. He establishes a psychic connection with a young girl who shares his extreme abilities, and who is being targeted by a group with similar abilities. They’ve found that their powers grow if they inhale the “steam” that comes off others with the power to shine, when they are suffering painful deaths (Source).
One thing you should know is that there was an adaptation of The Shining in 1980 directed by Stanley Kubrick starring Jack Nicholson and Shelley Duvall. The trailer has become one of the you-must-know scenes in film studies.
Would you say it’s a notable scene? See for yourself:
Though he can be seen in the recent heartwarming Disney’s Winnie the Pooh adaptation Christopher Robin, McGregor must give us a totally different look of modern horror in King’s movie. According to USA Today, he is re-watching Stanley Kubrick’s horror film and reading both King books.
Awwwww! As a horror movieholic, I can’t wait to see this adaptation! The planned release of the Doctor Sleep movie is January 2020. Please scream with me: “The horror vibes are coming!”
