‘Dune’ Actor Says Remake Will Be “Absolutely True” to the Novel

The newest Dune adaptation has only begun filming, but many people involved are confident that director Denis Villeneuve will deliver a stunning, cinematic epic—again.

According to Dazed, actor David Dastmalchian says that the remake will be true to the original Dune written by Frank Herbert, and will seemingly capture the novel’s intricacies in ways that David Lynch’s 1984 adaptation didn’t.

I can’t really discuss much about the script or the plot itself, but I can just tell you that old phrase “True to the spirit” or “honoring the spirit of”, and to be quite honest I haven’t even seen the most recent of the script, but in the way Denis has talked about the film and what I’ve seen, it’s absolutely true to and in honor of everything that Frank put into the novel. And translating something from novel form to cinema form requires a lot of mastery as storytellers go, and I think there’s no one better for that job than Denis.

Dastmalchian stars in the film as antagonist Piter de Vries and certainly has a reliable stamp of approval. After starring in other acclaimed films that Villeneuve directed, such as Prisoners and Blade Runner 2049, it should be easy for him to determine if a project of Villeneuve’s will succeed. Villeneuve also co-wrote the screenplay with Eric Roth and Jon Spaihts.

“When you think about Arrival and Blade Runner 2049, those are the two science fiction films that he’s crafted, you see his gift for telling stories that are visually stunning, but that are also rooted in really complex ideas and really fascinating characters,” he added.

Villeneuve himself has stated the importance of adapting straight from the source material, and learned from Lynch’s film, explaining, “David Lynch is one of the best filmmakers alive, I have massive respect for him. But when I saw his adaptation, I was impressed, but it was not what I had dreamed of, so I’m trying to make the adaptation of my dreams… I’m going back to the book, and going to the images that came out when I read it.”

Dune follows Timothee Chalamet’s Paul Atreides, whose family controls the only remaining planet with valuable resources. Control of Arrakis is highly sought after by competing noble families, and Paul’s family is betrayed. Paul must lead a rebellion in order to restore House Atreides’s reign.

Dune arrives November 20th, 2020.
