Don’t Count Sir Ian McKellen out of Amazon’s Planned ‘Lord of the Rings’ Prequel

Sir Ian McKellen and co-star Jenny Seagrove stopped by Graham Norton’s Radio 2 show on December 16th to discuss their West End Exorcist production, and naturally Norton couldn’t let McKellen leave without asking him about Amazon’s newest acquisition of the rights to the Tolkien estate and the planned prequel series.

“Amazon are doing a TV series of Lord of the Rings. Now isn’t that annoying? That there’s going to be another Gandalf in town?” asked Norton.

When McKellen responded, “What do you mean, another Gandalf?” Norton then asked if that meant he’s signed onto the project. “I haven’t said yes because I haven’t been asked,” said Sir Ian McKellen. “But are you suggesting that someone else is going to play it? Gandalf is over 7000 years old, so I’m not too old yet.”

Don’t be shocked that he hasn’t been asked to reprise his role just yet, there are no scripts, premises, cast or any creative personnel yet announced for the project.
