Pakistan is celebrating 70 years of independence today! Congratulations Pakistan! Did you know this interesting fact about the country’s name?
Pakistan is an acronym! It was invented by Choudhary Ramat Ali, a Pakistani Punjabi Muslim nationalist, one of the earliest proponents of the creation of the state of Pakistan.

In his words:
“‘Pakistan’ is composed of letters taken from the names of our homelands: that is, Punjab, Afghania [North-West Frontier Province], Kashmir, Iran, Sindh, Tukharistan, Afghanistan, and Balochistan. It means the land of the Paks, the spiritually pure and clean.”
It’s no secret we at Bookstr are fans of the written word and acronyms of any kind, so we were delighted to learn the etymology of ‘Pakistan’, and would like to wish our Pakistani readers a very happy independence day!
