Super Bowl Sunday has come and gone. Some people cheered with joy at the Patriot’s success, other crumbled in agony at the Falcon’s defeat. Most tuned in for the amazing commercials, while book lovers gawked at beautiful, twisted teaser for Hulu’s upcoming adaptation of The Handmaid’s Tale. Was anyone else surprised to see that little trailer make it into the Super Bowl LI’s mix of commercials? It was clearly an excellent idea: The Handmaid’s Tale is currently on Amazon’s bestseller list for books.
There has been a recent spike in dystopian book sales, so the dystopian world Margaret Atwood envisioned is jumping on to that trend. However, The Handmaid’s Tale probably owes it’s rise in popularity to football, not the current U.S. government…
Watch the trailer below. It’s deeply disturbing, especially as Commander Waterford, played by Joseph Fiennes, claims “We only wanted to make the world better, by ‘better’ never means better for everyone.” We also get glimpses of some never-before-seen characters, like the pregnant, scarred Janine (Madeline Brewster).
