Last weekend was DC FanDom, a virtual event for fans of DC films, comics, and the franchise as a whole to learn more about their favorite upcoming DC properties. There’s a whole lot to cover, so let’s not waste any more time. Here are the biggest reveals from DC FanDon 2020!
Director Matt Reeves spoke at length about his upcoming film adaptation of the Caped Crusader, including the fact that this is will be a Batman story more akin to Batman: Year Two, the four-part 1987 comic book series that depicted Batman as an established yet still new (and therefore still inexperienced) vigilante presence in Gotham City. Reeves also stressed that, while his upcoming movie is not going to be an origin story of the character, it will still touch upon certain aspects of his origin, as a murder mystery also brings Batman into an investigation of “the epic history of corruption in Gotham” and the question, “Where did my family sit in this?” all of which makes it incredibly personal for him. Reeves also promised unique interpretations of Alfred, Ridder, and Catwoman while still staying true to their comic book roots, and ended things by debuting an exciting new trailer.

Certainly the biggest topic of discussion for the upcoming movie The Flash was Barry Allen not only traveling through time, but also through multiple universes. Ezra Miller described previous DC adaptations as existing in their “own bubbles” with “different versions of the same character”. However, with The Flash opening the door to a connected multiverse, “All these stories can start to collide.” As writer Christina Hodson put it, “The cinematic multiverse will be born out of this movie.” While no other plot or character news was revealed, concept art for the Flash’s new suit was, apparently having been built by Bruce Wayne himself.
the suicide squad
In spite of the critical and box office bomb that was 2016’s Suicide Squad, a reboot of the film is currently on its way, with director James Gunn of Guardians of the Galaxy fame taking the reins. During his panel, he revealed the massive star-studded cast, which includes but is not limited to Idris Elba as Bloodsport, John Cena as Peacemaker and Sean Gunn as Weasel, with Viola Davis, Jai Courtney and Margot Robbie reprising their roles as Amanda Waller, Captain Boomerang, and Harley Quinn, respectfully.
Zack Snyder’s Justice League
The panel for the upcoming “Snyder Cut” of The Justice League revealed that the film will not be given a cinematic release, but will instead be converting to four-part miniseries, which will debut as one-hour episodes on HBO Max. Snyder said they would then likely also release it as a combined film, while also noting a distribution plan was being discussed for countries that don’t currently have HBO Max. Snyder also said that not only will there be far more of Cyborg, saying, “Cyborg is the heart of the movie. Cyborg is the thing that I think in the end holds the team together in a lot of ways,” but also a lot more with the Flash, including something, “I don’t think you’ve ever seen before with his abilities.” Will Snyder’s Flash explore the character’s abilities of time travel, finally explaining that abandoned plot point in Batman v. Superman? We can only hope!
As Dwayne Johnson noted, Black Adam has been a project he has been involved with for over a decade now, but after all this time, the movie is finally close to production. It was revealed that the Justice Society will be introduced in Black Adam, comprised of Hawkman, Dr. Fate, Cyclone and Atom-Smasher, and the titular character’s past will be explored, how he was a slave and that he will be presented as “Judge, jury, and executioner. He believes in an eye for an eye. He’ll do everything he can to protect his people and more so his family.”
This is just a fraction of all of the DC news that has been revealed this weekend. If you missed it, fortunately for you, this was only the first half of DC FanDom, with the virtual event finishing up this September from the 12th to the 13th, so we should be seeing a whole lot more exciting DC sneak peeks!
